Just got my first tattoo. For those of you who are unaware, this is the (simplified, but for a reason) equation for a circle.
I thought long and hard about this particular one, and I finally decided to get it before going off to college (I leave tomorrow).  I knew I wanted (a) tattoo(s), I knew I wanted an equation, and I knew I wanted something to do with circles. When I finally decided, I knew this was the one.
Why?
1. The symbolism of circles. Zen, “everything”, infinity, cycles, perfection, change, endlessness, the sun, the moon, the water cycle, what have you. This is my version of an ouroboros (though that itself may become a tattoo in the future). To me, though there is constant change, there is also constant symmetry. Circle of life (and it moves us all), we are all connected to each other (in a circle, in a hoop that never ends), we are one (you and I, we are like the earth and sky), etc.
2. I love math. Though I plan on studying biological sciences, math has a special place in my life. I enjoy thinking logically and creatively, and really understanding something that was once a jumble of letters and numbers is very fulfilling to me. Like art, math is an enjoyable hobby. I see colors with letters and numbers, so math looks like a complex, interesting rainbow of fun to me.
3. This particular form takes its shape from the Pythagorean theorem, the first and most useful (to me) equation I learned in high school. My freshman Geometry teacher (Mr. Kurtz) helped me recognize my love of math and he constantly related almost everything back to good ol’ a^2 + b^2 = c^2. So this tattoo is also a reminder of what originally inspired my love of learning and my enjoyable time spent in math classes throughout high school. Getting it before I leave (with some family and friends present) helps me remember the stability of my “roots.” Though simple in the scope of known math, the mechanics of the equation are what made me love the subject.
4. This form of the equation also indicates that the center of the circle is directly on the origin, or (0,0). Right now I believe that we all come from nothing, working our way into existence by living and thriving. At the end of the day, we’re all just beautifully intricate, astronomically improbable sacks of flesh, bone, and parts of atoms. Imperfect perfection centered around nothing at all. Kind of out there and mildly poetic, but the sentiment remains a part of my reasons for this tattoo.
My experience was made great by Curtis at Ink Spot Tattoo in Altamonte Springs, FL. He made me tell him I loved it (“Do you just like it? I wanna hear that you love it”) before he even started, and vocalizing that made me realize I wanted this as a part of me for the rest of my life. The tattoo is a million times better than I could have ever imagined.

Can’t agree more

These belong to my boyfriend and I. We got them done in Brooklyn, NY at 1228. I just really love him.
